Liberal Bill Maher paid Donald Trump a backhanded compliment Friday during a panel discussion on his HBO show, “Real Time.” Maher said the former president would easily win the 2024 election if he let go of the last election.
“And I just thought, you know, if Trump could just let go of the election, which he can’t, he can win this so easy because he can win just on Drag Queen Story Hour,” said Maher.
Later, the comedian host cited a recent New Hampshire poll showing DeSantis enjoys a two-point edge over Trump in a Republican primary matchup.
“That’s right, Donny,” Maher mocked Trump, “he beat you.”
The show host repeated his earlier remark that Trump would win in 2024 if he could just let go of the 2020 election. Maher mused that Trump’s continued claims of a stolen election has become like a smelly hotel room that eventually prompts a change of rooms. He further described Florida’s Republican governor as being more vibrant than the 45th president.
“If you like people who don’t lose elections,” Maher added, reminiscent of Trump’s putdown of deceased Senator John McCain’s time as a Vietnam prisoner of war.
“And he’s also not plagued by scandal the way that Trump is,” piped up podcast host Katie Herzog, referring to Ron DeSantis. “He’s a much stronger candidate.” She remarked that the House J6 Committee hearings have been a compelling watch, but a part of her thinks that could destroy Democrats in November. Herzog declared that DeSantis would most likely be Biden’s 2024 opponent if Trump doesn’t win the Republican nomination.
She concluded by stating DeSantis could beat Biden if they were matched up in 2024.
“Anybody could beat Biden,” responded Maher, adding, “Trump might be the one guy who can lose to Biden.”
“With DeSantis, you’re right because he’s a winner,” the host continued. “He runs the third-largest state. Trump is a hotel greeter who lost.”
“His insurrection failed.”
